This part of December is often filled with gift-giving. There is excitement, there is anticipation, there is a twinkle in the eye as we wait to see the reaction of our loved ones opening what we have chosen. This year, we’d like to give you a gift, too. It is wrapped only in care and the unique understanding of what it’s like to be a small business owner, working hard to care for current customers and clients, while seeking out new ones to serve.
This holiday, we’d like to encourage you to keep putting yourself out there. People need your business. Your products and your services are special and important. There are people who are currently being wow-ed with how great what you do is—even if they don’t say it often. And there are others who are looking, or searching the internet, or asking friends for someone who does exactly what you do, in the way that only you can do it.
As you well know, that is easier said than done. It’s hard to be a business owner and entrepreneur right now. The internet is crowded with advertisements and messages, and it can be difficult to stand out, to feel like the right people are seeing what you have to offer. The competition to retain customers is tough.
But, oh, the rewards of it! We know, deep down, that the successes you have as a small business owner are worth the struggle. When you walk with tearful clients through the door of their dream home, or when you help someone successfully tangle with the court system and come out on top, or when you hear from a client whose books finally make sense to them—whenever you complete a cycle doing what you love, it becomes clear again that what you do is important. It matters.
So this year, we’d like to encourage you to keep doing what you are doing, and to offer you the challenge of growth in 2018. That will look different from business to business but we firmly believe that, for every challenge of doing business right now, the opportunities are rising to meet them. People genuinely want to give business to companies that will cultivate relationships with them. Great customer service has never been more meaningful, and people have never needed prompt responses and clear answers more than they do now.
Whatever steps you need to take to connect with the right customers and clients, and to grow relationships with existing ones, we encourage you to do it! If it’s outsourcing work, make that a priority. If it’s setting time or digital boundaries that give you adequate rest and make you ultimately productive, do it! If it’s trying a new marketing experiment, go for it!
We believe in small business owners. And that means we believe in YOU. Yes, you. The one who is bleary-eyed from getting all the holiday orders out. The one who is trying, trying, to forget about the stacks of work left undone so you can sit by the tree and enjoy the gift-opening frenzy. The one who is already obsessing over your 2018 goals while still trying to get your 2017 inventory straight. We believe in what you do, and we support you.
We see you, small business owner. We know the value of what you do. Your current customers need what you have to offer in business. Your family and friends need what you have to offer them personally. And your future clients need you—and they may not even know it yet. But we do.
So get out there and do it. Make the changes you need to make to grow. Stop doing the stuff that bogs you down. Get back to what you are passionate about. Get out of your rut. Keep sharing your gift with the world. You’re the only one who can.
